Megan Milani
Megan Milani (b. 1995) is a mixed-media artist whose work explores relationships with intuition and tactility, and balances the curious juxtapositions between organic and structural forms and functions. Born and raised in New Orleans but currently working and living in Brooklyn, New York, Milani’s work reflects the dynamic contrasts within the vast world of contemporary art and testifies to the creative process as a reflection of the subconscious.
Her intimate familiarity with these contrasts stems from her successful career as an engineer, where innovation relies on strict structural stability and enduring balance. Yet, her art shatters these rules. Milani knows the requirements of applied innovation well. But through creating, she engages with her subconscious and the curious influence of the periphery to relinquish the cautious calculations defining her daily life. Her color choices draw from impressions of the world around her, and in this, she utilizes the expertise and innovation of her day job to reengineer a wide variety of subjects into visually immersive worlds. An earthy ochre can stem from architectural color contrasts and how these moments recall moments of individuality within something so everyday. Bright greens and golds invite the bridges between artificiality and naturalism found in precious metals; jeweled fuschias and violets mirror the vibrant surprises brought forth by flora and fauna. These colors grow from things as unexpected as bacterial growth to those as intimate as rosy cheeks on a winter’s day.
Milani works with traditional mediums such as watercolor and ink on cold-pressed paper, but incorporates textile elements such as gauze to demonstrate the fluidity between her artistic identity and the functionality of everyday life. What results are works that act as evidence to the conceptual balance she carefully builds between her two worlds- that of science and that of art. Pigmented watercolors leave unique and irreplicable patterns through the layering of gauze and paper, and what results are compositions that evoke identification with everything from cellular structures, to botanical abundance, to landscapes of memory. Her work acts as testimony to the possibility of achieving balance between worlds that seem irreconcilable. Every day, and with every brushstroke or application, she unlearns rigidity and embraces spontaneity. Inevitably, her art weaves a narrative that speaks implicitly to the beauty and bounty of letting go.
